Locals Ashlie Blake, Tanner Fulmer, and Courtney Robinson Win Three of Four Top-Individual Awards at Las Vegas Track Classic.

With 35 teams and 840-plus athletes—including many from out-of-state—competing over two days, Las Vegas Track Classic is the biggest meet of the year in southern Nevada.

This year’s event was held at Desert Oasis H. S. and produced a number of outstanding performances, including new meet records in the girls shot put and discus by Liberty’s Ashlie Blake and the boys varsity pole vault, by Desert Oasis senior Tanner Fulmer. Blake and Fulmer were selected as the Outstanding Field Athletes of the meet.

Courtney Robinson, a junior at Canyon Springs, was selected the Outstanding Female Track Athlete of the meet as she won both hurdles races—100 meter and 300 meter varsity hurdles—and was on two winning relay teams—the 4 x 100 and the 4 x 200 varsity relays.

The Outstanding  Male Track Athlete award was won by Tyler Smith, from the Leduc Track Club in Canada, who won the 800 meter run in a record time of 1:53.08.

For Ashlie Blake it really was a two-day meet. The Liberty sophomore competed in the sophomore shot and discus on Friday and the same two varsity events on Saturday, winning all four. She had her best day on Friday, as she set new records in both: a 49 feet, 1 inch toss in the shot and the heave of 151 feet 3 inches in the discus. Both are marks worthy of national ranking. According to dyestat.com (national high school web site), 49’ 1” is currently the #3 high-school best in the country and 151’ 3” is currently #5 in the USA.

“Forty nine one is not quite a PR, but we’re getting there,” said Blake. It (Friday) was a good warm up for today.  I’m looking for 50 (feet) in the shot put.”

“The rust is starting to come off her,” added her throws coach, Tim Cagle. “We’re starting to get the numbers we’re looking for. She’s feeling good; that’s what it’s all about. She’s happy and healthy right now.”

Tanner Fulmer became the first 15 foot vaulter in Nevada this year, clearing 15 feet, 2 inches, a new personal best.

“I’m pretty excited about today,” said Fulmer. “I was on a pole I’d never been on before; it’s pretty cool…. I’m really looking forward to jumping against Nick Maestretti from Reno (defending state champion). He’s my competition.”

“He had a great day! He’s at the right stage, right now, at this time of the season,” said Steve Fulmer, his dad and vault coach.  “He’s started out good and strong. We’re working on mechanics and he’s looking like he can do 16 (feet) this year.”

For Courtney Robinson, it was especially satisfying to come back after a year off. Her time of 14.81 in the 100 meter hurdles was a new meet record. She won the 300 meter hurdles in 44.79.

“It was a huge PR (in both races),” said Robinson.” I’m trying to win state… I want to break the state record.”

“The best is yet to come, “ said her hurdles coach, Sam Germany.  “She qualified for state as a freshman. She sat out her sophomore year because of a school transfer. This year she came back, and she is really focused. Those were good marks—really good marks—she put up today.”

Other double winners included James Linde of the Coquitlam Cheetahs (California) who won the 100 and 200 meter dashes and Bailey Blackhurst of Doherty (California) who won the girls 1500 and 3000 meter runs.
